Our story as a Salvadoran restaurant in Houston
Variedades La Oriental is more than a restaurant. It is the result of years of work, recipes kept in memory, and a Salvadoran community in Houston that deserves to eat like home.
How it all started
Before Variedades La Oriental, there was another step. For years we ran a small restaurant called Elsy's, where we learned what it means to cook for a community — to understand what people are looking for when they walk in hungry and craving something that reminds them of home.
In 2019 we decided to open Variedades La Oriental with a bigger vision: not just to serve food, but to create a place where Salvadoran and Central American families in Houston could find under one roof the flavor of their homeland and the products they need every day.
We have not stopped since.
Why we are called "La Oriental"
The name comes from the eastern region of El Salvador, known for a culinary tradition distinct from the rest of the country. In the east, the pupusa revuelta is made with chicharrón and queso — no beans. It is how our grandmothers taught us, and it is how we serve it here, every day.
When people ask why our revuelta is different, the answer is simple: that is how it is eaten in the east. It is not an oversight, it is a recipe.
What we serve
At Variedades La Oriental you will find:
- Handmade pupusas every day — pupusa revuelta eastern style, frijol con queso, queso con loroco, chicharrón, jalapeño con queso, calabaza, and more.
- Traditional soups — including Sopa de Gallina India, our signature recipe, made with the traditional Salvadoran method and served every day.
- Tamales of chicken, pork, elote (sweet), and pisques (bean tamales) — the way they were made at home.
- Hot atoles — elote, oatmeal, chuco, champurrado, and chilate.
- Desayunos típicos — Salvadoran and Honduran breakfast plates, full and hearty, made to start the day right.
- Antojitos — Salvadoran, Honduran (baleadas), and Mexican.
- Parrilladas for sharing with family.
Everything is prepared fresh every day in our kitchen. No shortcuts.

And also, the store
Under the same roof we have a store of Central American products — supplements, vitamins, items imported from El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, and other Central American countries. Things that are sometimes hard to find in Houston but for us are part of everyday life.
If you came in for a pupusa and leave with a box of Salvadoran quesadilla, a crema, queso duro, or the vitamins your mom uses back home — that is also part of who we are.

What we believe
Three things we consider non-negotiable:
1. Handmade. Pupusas are patted by hand, one at a time. Soups are cooked slowly. Tamales are wrapped one by one. There is no quick version of work done well.
2. Honor the tradition. We do not modify recipes to "fit in" in Houston. If the eastern pupusa revuelta has chicharrón and queso, that is how we serve it. If sopa de gallina india has güisquil and corn, that is how we cook it. Tradition is what people come looking for.
3. We close on Sundays. We work six days a week, Monday through Saturday, with all our heart. On this day we close to give glory and honor to God, rest with family, and come back Monday with the same energy. It is not a business decision — it is a conviction.
Serving the north Houston community
We are at 11228 Airline Dr Ste A, Houston, TX 77037, in the heart of north Houston. Our customers are Salvadoran, Honduran, Guatemalan, Mexican, and Central American families who live in Aldine, Greenspoint, Acres Home, North Houston, and the surrounding areas.
We also serve people from across the city and the state who come looking for the flavor they cannot find elsewhere.
To everyone who has supported us since 2019 — thank you. We keep doing this for you.
The team behind the food
Almost all of our team is Central American. Cooks who learned at home, in El Salvador and Honduras, and who now bring that knowledge to the comal and the griddle here in Houston. Every pupusa that leaves our kitchen passes through the hands of someone who knows exactly how it should be.
We are not a business where the recipe comes from a corporate manual. It is the recipe these women have made all their lives.
Come eat with us
The best way to get to know us is to come eat. We are open Monday through Saturday, serving from early morning to late.
