Horchata Salvadoreña

$2.50 (small) · $5.00 (large)

Our horchata is made in house with the Salvadoran recipe: toasted morro seed, rice, sesame, cacao, and traditional spices. It is thicker and creamier than Mexican horchata, and has a distinct flavor most people do not know until they try it.

The difference from Mexican horchata

Mexican horchata is more familiar in Houston, but Salvadoran horchata is a different drink:

  • Morro seed — fruit of the morro tree, toasted and ground. That is what gives it the distinctive flavor.
  • Cacao — a touch the Mexican version does not have.
  • Traditional spices — cinnamon, vanilla, and others.
  • Creamier — the texture is thicker and more substantial.

It is not better or worse — just different. If you are coming in expecting Mexican horchata, heads up. If you want to try the version people drink in El Salvador, this is it.

Sizes

We serve it in two sizes:

  • Small — $2.50
  • Large — $5.00

The large is almost always ordered by someone who already knows it. The small is perfect to pair with a pupusa or a main dish.

How we serve it

Served cold with ice, in a plastic cup to-go or to stay. We prepare it in batches throughout the day — whether you order it at 9am or 7pm, it tastes the same.

It pairs well with: pupusas, tamales, desayuno típico, soups, parrilladas. Basically anything on the Salvadoran menu.

Frequently asked questions

What is in Salvadoran horchata?

Toasted morro seed, rice, sesame, cacao, and traditional spices like cinnamon and vanilla. Mixed with water, milk, and sugar at the time of serving.

Is it very different from Mexican horchata?

Yes. Mexican horchata is made mainly with rice and cinnamon. Salvadoran horchata has morro seed and cacao, which gives it a different flavor and a creamier texture. If you want to try something new, give it a shot.

Does it have milk?

Yes. The traditional preparation has milk. If you have intolerance or prefer a milk-free version, let us know when you order and we will tell you the options.

Is it very sweet?

It is sweet, yes — but not too much. If you want it less sweet, ask when you order.

Is it available every day?

Yes. We make it daily and always have it. If you come during a very busy hour and it is running low, wait a few minutes while we make the next batch.
